This years Shakespeare in the park was The Three Musketeers. Performed on a beautiful Thursday evening, the play was enjoyed by many folks from Roundup as well as the surrounding communities. People brought their lawn chairs, picnic food, pizzas, and there was even a food truck on sight. The play was a good follow-up entertainment after a busy Fourth of July. The play is brought to Roundup through the coordination of Bill Milton, and the Arts and Culture Committee of the Musselshell Valley...
Because of a ruling by a federal judge, Signal Peak Energy is challenged with difficulty of trying to find ways to mine around Federal lands. In true Roundup fashion, the Independence Day Celebrations were a huge success. The weather played along nicely for everyone to fully enjoy each day. Two days of concerts, two days of parades, two days of Rodeo, and four days of carnival, flags, and Roundup Pride. Many people travel to Roundup just for this holiday, because Roundup is one of the best places in Montana to celebrate Independence Day for a great time in a small town. This year, RIDE (Roundup Independence Days Extravaganza) brought...
The museum is a building that once was a Catholic school from the 1920's to 1950's. Many of the students were borders from out of town. The teachers were Ursuline Nuns, who lived in a house south of the school. The school was eventually closed due to lack of students in 1952. Twenty years later in 1972 the Museum bought the building. The Museum opened to the public the following year in 1973. The Museum isn't doing a huge celebration, but they are having a float in the parade, as well as being...

As you are driving East on Highway 12, you could almost miss the small town of Melstone. But if you happen to look to the left as you are slowing through the speed zone, you will see the Heritage Historical sign that marks the small-town significance. Not always a small town, Melstone once had a Doctor, Dentist, Bank, Railroad Station, a couple hotels, bars, hardware and general store, hospital, and school. Like many dots on the map along Highway 12, the rise and fall came and went with the...
On Monday June19th, a crane was brought to the North East corner of the city park to place the new toilets. Many people came by to see the massive crane, and the progression of the installation. The new toilets have been a work in progress by the city to acquire permits, contractors, and most importantly, funding. All of these segments take time, and to see the final part of installation come to a finish is a job well done for the city. Thanks to Signal Peak Community Foundation in helping at...
Death By Association, followed by Death By Hostility, two novels by Roundup local Dani Clifton, follow protagonist Samantha Harris, a security analyst, who finds herself caught up in more than she bargains for. Hired to find security weaknesses for cutting edge companies, she does background checks on potential employees and business owners. The character is serious, yet endearingly quirky and humorous. She might use questionable tactics at times, but only for the right reasons, at least we...

A local farm is making big waves. Now in her fourth growing season, Andi Thatcher has grown and harvested.....FLOWERS. This is not what you may think of as a Montana farm, or agriculture product. Yet, Andi is very much part of the farming community and growing commercial product. In year one, many of the plants that Andi started weren't able to be cut for flowers until the second growing season. Farming, a career that involves loads of patients is also one of the most rewarding or devastating...
The Fat Straw is a newly opened Main Street business featuring Boba Tea. What is Boba tea, you might ask. Boba tea is a sweet milk tea with brown sugar flavored tapioca pearls. You can drink and eat at the same time. It sounds funny, but this drink trend is extremely popular, and surprisingly delicious. The straw needed to drink Boba is extra-large, or you might call it a "Fat Straw". Johnny Chavez and Stephanie Graben of PRONTO Construction are the owners of the new business. Located at the...
Justin Carlton Running for the school board was not a goal of Justin's, but a couple years ago someone mentioned that if a school board position opened up that he would be a good candidate for it. A few weeks ago, he heard it again, then again from three more people, so Justin felt maybe someone was trying to tell him something. The school system faces new problems nationwide, fortunately some of the bigger problems are not yet happening in Roundup, but they could. Justin would like Roundup to...
Officer Manning, The K9 handler has had new dog Aki since February of 2022. The new dog was purchased for Musselshell County Sheriffs Department due to the law change that legalized marijuana. Can you put a price tag on a community, a culture, a family, an individual? What does it cost when one person loses a job? What does it cost when a community loses a business? To explain the impact of the Coal Mining to Musselshell County you must start when coal began in this county. In a hand drawn map of Musselshell County in 1912 by E.J. Parkinson, Musselshell County was assessed at that time with a total area of 3044 square miles of which 612 square miles were assessed as coal lands. The...
In Part one, diving into accusations against Signal Peak Mine, we started giving the other side of the story. Continuing on; Further accusations against the local mine are as follows; "Under its original permit, Signal Peak committed to monitoring water levels in the region. But it succeeded in getting that provision removed, one of almost 300 revisions to the permit that environment groups say have been made without public input." Response from Holland & Hart; "DEQ approved the mine's current...
On Tuesday evening March 7th, the Roundup High School made a presentation for a four day school week. The public attended, and the event was streamed live on Facebook through Musselshell Media. It’s no secret that there has been an intentional, international push for a culture shift to “clean” energy. Green energy is a noble mission that could be taken one step at a time, helping society adjust and conform to it in a natural and manageable way. Unfortunately, the push is a fast-paced warfare against natural resources, and those who support it, with complete disregard for the communities and cultures they disrupt. Coal, a local target for environmental activists, is still mined within the United States, and locally in Musse...
On June 14th, 2010, Linda Cureau joined a group in Roundup called TOPS. TOPS is an acronym for Taking Off Pounds Sensibly. This year is the 75th year anniversary of the organization. The group has helped many people take control over their issues with weight as a support group with weekly weigh-ins, and challenges and comradery that keep the group inspired. Montana has 41 chapters, and Roundup has one of them. Over the course of ten years, Linda has lost one hundred pounds, and has kept it off....
The local VFW Post 4925 is embarking on a "make-over" for the War Memorial Park. Signal Peak generously donated $14,723 for six new flag poles and flags to represent the six branches of the military, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The flags will be placed ten feet apart, giving a beautiful presentation for the end of Main Street. Many other donations have been made towards the project for solar lights, concrete, and dirt work. Veteran Bill Turner mentioned...
In a constitution carry state, it is a good idea to have training and education when owning and using a firearm. Many local people have had Hunter's Safety, a critical class for gun owners who intend to hunt or anyone owning a gun. However, when considering self-defense, it becomes even more important to understand the law, and control of your firearm. Legal use of Force, is a class that teaches you when you can and cannot legally shoot someone in self-defense. Violent Encounters and the...
Though I normally feature a business or local person in our community, today I felt called to one of the greatest things about living in Musselshell County. Nature. People who love living in Montana like the outdoors. A complaint of new people is often "What is there to do here?" I would like to feature a special public area called Asparagus Point, just down the road on Highway 12 heading East. Asparagus Point is a small recreation area where locals go to fish, hunt, camp, picnic, pick...
