The little flower shop near Radio Shack has just finished a redecoration throughout their store. They have now reopened with new gifts and local artisan crafts. Stop in and see what they have to offer. The sisters Jessie and Angie are both artists. They have original artwork of their own, as well as flower arrangements, a large selection of cards, a reading nook for those who would like to come and sit for a while, and handmade treasures all through the store. There is something for everyone,...
Bob Pancratz, Mike Goffena, and Michael Turley met with me to discuss what is currently going on in the county, and what things will be coming in the future. The commissioners provide the oversight of how the county spends tax dollars, and what new things the county will put money into. They are the protectors of the tax payer's dollars. The county has ARPA money, and COVID money that has been issued to our county for use, and that has provided money matches for many grants so that the county...
In a recent meeting with Angelica Mozqueda, the prevention specialist for Musselshell and Golden County, we were updated on what the Prevention is for, and what it is doing. Prevention came about during the time of COVID, in 2020. The state of Montana recognized that the youth are struggling with mental health and substance abuse. Angie explains that at the time of COVID, the state had only three prevention specialists for the entire state of Montana, covering only the major urban areas. After...
Twenty-five years ago, in 1997, the Conoco gas station on Main Street opened. The owners, Terry and Denise (McCleary)Watson have employed local folks, and provided a consistent product for the community. The cost of energy has gone up and down many times during those twenty-five years, but never as high as in the last two years. The higher fuel costs have not slowed business for the little station though. The small convenient center and deli have gone strong from day one, to the point of...
If you aren't paying attention, you may not have noticed that First American Title has re-branded and changed its name to Flying S effective October 31 of this year. The title company at 226 Main Street has the same business, same employees, and same fees, just a new name. The First American Title Company has been in business for over forty years, and has multiple locations throughout Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Some people have confused the business with the national underwriter based in...
No one can resist the little BBQ take-out at the Big Sky Motel, whether it's for the waffles, or the barbeque dinners. After several months of success at the small take-out diner, they have stepped up to a new location with indoor dining. The new location at 101 Main was previously "The Corner Café", and "The Cattle Drive Coffee & Bakery". This re-opening is great news for the public who wants to dine, and great for the Barbeque. The business has been such a success, and the public demand for in...

The Roundup Chamber of Commerce utilized the local Firefighter's training to help decorate the courthouse trees for the holiday season. Darren Gebhardt and Justin Russell, used a training opportunity to help the Chamber put up the new Christmas lights on the tall trees at the courthouse. During the training the men used the expanding ladder to reach across the courthouse yard to the two tall trees at either side of the main entrance of the building, and through communication, the operator of...

Every year our local Veterans do the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Grade School. It is always a somber moment when the guns are fired, and taps are played. It always brings tears to my eyes, and this year was no exception as I stood with over three hundred well behaved and perfectly quiet grade-schoolers and adults in two degree weather. In the moments before the ceremony, as I stood waiting, the children were brought outside, and as they passed I heard one child comment to another, "This is...
Quilts of Valor is a group that was started in 2003 to bring comfort and healing to Veterans through the gift of a homemade quilt. The founder, Catherine Roberts' began the group because of a dream. "The dream was as vivid as real life. I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw...
The Roundup Herald recently had an article about some new interest in one of the school's teachers. A request was made for me to follow up and see if there is more information. I went to the district office and spoke to Josiah Mayfield, the new District Superintendent. I asked him if he could shed some light on the issue, and he gave me the schools public statement, attached at the end of the article, which was also published in the Roundup Herald. It seems as if the problem is solving itself...
HB Feeds, Harley Blegen and son Harley brought the feed source to Roundup in a big way. There are a couple other places that offer bagged animal feed, but Harley has bulk for ranchers. He and his sons bought the old A-1 Propane place that had sat empty for years at the east end of Roundup on HWY 12. He has recently added a large warehouse building, and is soon to get the flooring poured and will begin stocking even more merchandise. He carries bulked bagged feed and mineral for livestock....
Representative Barry Usher Barry Usher is running as State Senator Elect for District 20. He won over Geraldine Custer in the primary. I was privileged to have the opportunity to interview him this past week. That full interview is available to watch on the Facebook page called Musselshell Media, or on YouTube under the title "Barry Usher, candidate for State Senate Dist. 20, full interview". Barry has been the house district 40 representative for the last six years. Our house senator was...
Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) Stacy Zinn spoke to the public on Monday October 17th at the Senior Center. The talk was sponsored by Musselshell County Prevention. Stacy spoke informatively about the different kinds of drugs and drug abuse that the agency is seeing in Montana. The influx of fentanyl is the gravest concern at the moment because it is the most dangerous drug of all, and is currently being laced in many other drugs. The cartels are moving into Montana and you might wonder why. She...
Earth Science Foundation has been digging. And digging. They have had a successful year in Musselshell County finding prehistoric bones and leading digs for students, vets, and other interested folks who just want to get out and experience fossil hunting. Thomas Hebert has committed to adding these finds to our local museum to add to the already fantastic historical artifacts and memories that the museum has collected from Musselshell County. The new exhibits will be taking the history of our...
For a while we have seen that the old Harley Repair shop has been closed. The new owners spent five weeks remodeling their new store, Cloudz Vape. On September 30, 2022, the store opened the doors to the public. Not being a smoker of any kind, it isn’t a place I would ordinarily shop, but to my surprise they did have other items as well. The store was clean and quite beautiful. They offer vape products, CBD products, reusable smoking devices, bags, bath bombs, and even a product to help with w...
John Jaurique and his wife Alyssa have opened a new barber shop at the Ideal Motel 926 Main Street. The modern shop offers styles that are "on trend" with fades, unique designs, and braiding. John and his wife moved to Roundup only a month ago, but John got straight to work cutting and styling hair for the "back to school" rush. John's shop is at the Main Street shop connected with the Ideal Motel. John's wife, Alyssa, also works at the barber shop. She does braids, extensions, colors, and they...
Wednesday, August 31, 2022 the new program called Musselshell County Prevention had their first public meeting led by Community Prevention Specialist, Angelica Mozqueda. It is a program that is partnered with the Mental Health Center in Billings to build and sustain a healthy and safe community. Prevention is focused on substance abuse, and is defined in their flyer as "a science...
One doesn't have to look far on Facebook to see complaints of theft or vandalism in Roundup. You can even drive around town and see buildings that have been "tagged". It is becoming more common in our small, safe community to see this activity increasing. Whether it is Billings crime coming this way, increased drug use in the community, or the influx of new population, or all three, everyone can see that changes are coming to Roundup. While most changes are positive, we all need to work...
If you haven't heard of EnergiSystems, you are not alone. It is a local business that, though very successful, is almost unknown. EnergiSystems is a business that builds gas stations and services them, and builds carwashes and services them. Owner, Rob Gustafson works locally and all throughout Montana in a construction business that is unlike any other. A construction that is critical, yet mostly unseen when everything is done. EnergiSystems install the fuel tanks underground, the pumps, and...
Some folks have seen a team of horses haying along highway 87 earlier this year. You might think this rancher is going to great lengths to save on fuel with the prices being so high, but Jim Quade just loves his team of horses, and likes to have the chance to keep them trained and working. I received a special invitation to come watch three teams haying at Ken and Daphne Kuhlmann's ranch. Jim sold Ken his swather, and Ken loaned Jim his horse team. They got together to swath Ken's field on...
