  • Melstone Sophomore Kierra Hougan Rides Rodeo in Vegas

    Lura Pitman|Jan 12, 2022

Melstone currently has a few rodeo families, Newmans, Grebes, Robinsons, Cates, and Hougens. After my interview with Sage Newman two months ago, I was referred by a reader to speak with Kierra Hougan. Kierra, though a younger rider, had also qualified to ride rodeo in Las Vegas. Kierra is the daughter of Alan and Mikell Hougen. Alan and Mikell both rode rodeo for many years. Alan in Roping and Mikell in Barrell Racing. Kierra seems to prefer to do both. She is currently racing barrels as well...

  • Roundup Panthers

    Rick Griffith|Jan 12, 2022

Tuesday evening, January 4th, the Panthers hosted the Red Lodge Rams in a district 4-B contest. The original game was postponed before Christmas break. Christmas break was tough on the Panthers as some of the players ended up with the flu bug and it had its lingering effects on Tuesday’s game. For those Panther fans who have come to the games they have watched a group of kids who work extremely hard for 32 minutes. Tuesday was no exception as the Panthers worked their tails off all night but I am afraid they have sore feet. For all of their e...

"These grants will serve 22 tourism and recreation projects across Montana, including unincorporated small towns, rural communities, and areas of known attractions to non-resident visitors," Commerce Director Scott Osterman said. • Letters to the Editor

    Jan 12, 2022

The Chronicle’s 12/31 editorial slamming Montana’s Republican legislature for representing the voters who sent them, was a perfect example of the hypocrisy and elitism of the far-left. Shame on these legislators, says the Chronicle, for passing bills their constituents want, but the unions and left-wing radicals object to – “forcing” these groups to file lawsuits that negate the legislative process. What this editorial was telling us is that democracy only works if you're promoting liberal and socialist ideas. When democrati...

  • The cost of legislative zeal

    Jan 12, 2022

After the 2021 Montana Legislature adjourned, Democratic lawmakers quipped that bills passed by the Republican majority would produce a lot of jobs — for lawyers. Those predictions are proving to be true. A recent memo produced by legislative staff said that, as of November, state attorneys had spent over 1,800 hours defending challenges to laws passed in the 2021 session. And that doesn’t include time spent by plaintiffs’ lawyers on the challenges. The laws in question addressed gun rights, judicial appointments, abortion access, voting rights...

  • COVID-19 and the End of Government Schooling's Main Value Proposition

    Jan 12, 2022

In mid-2020, I mused that if the COVID-19 pandemic ended up producing any silver linings, the most likely bright spot would be its impact on government -- so-called "public" -- education. Throughout the previous spring, government schools had largely shut down in-person classes, switching to ad hoc and, it seems, fairly lame, "remote learning." Some besieged, bedraggled parents held out hope for an autumn return to the previous normalcy. Others looked at the "remote learning" setup and decided they (perhaps in cooperation with other parents)...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Jan 12, 2022

On January 7, 2022, Biden gave a press briefing and a miserable economy report, which many call,"Fairy tale" lies. U.S. economist use a key metric system that shows results of any Presidential administration, and this one is bad news for Biden. This metric system measures economic misery which is made up of the percentage of unemployed plus percentage of inflation rate. Before Joe Biden took office, our growth as a nation was climbing and so were the lower wages of many Americans in introductory level jobs. If Biden would have continued the...

  • How Local is Local?

    Jan 12, 2022

By Abby Majerus, Director of the Snowy Mountain FADC It’s hard to walk through a grocery store or skim a restaurant’s menu without seeing the phrase “local food” or “buy local”. But how local is local? A quick google search might tell you that local food means that it was raised within 100 miles of where you are purchasing it. Since there does not seem to be a standard definition of local food, this opens up the area it can mean whatever you want it to be. It’s easy to reason how the eggs, steak and bread you eat regularly here in Central Mo...
