On 22 March, this double-tanker-truck carrying a full, heavy load slid off North Gage Road about 11 miles from Route 12. There were no injuries or leakage of petroleum, and the oil was syphoned out of the front tank allowing it and the truck to be removed from the ditch that evening. The next day a rescue team from Brewers and Rocky Mountain Crude Oil spent 1 ½ hours syphoning oil and removing the back tank out of the chasm of a borrow-pit. The driver discussed with the owner of the property...

MONTANA – Governor Steve Bullock today issued a Directive requiring Montanans to stay home and temporarily closes all nonessential businesses and operations to curtail the spread of COVID-19. The order, which goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. on March 28, will buy time for health care workers on the frontlines and seeks to limit long term impacts to the state’s economy. “In consultation with public health experts, health care providers, and emergency management professionals, I have determined that to protect public health and human safety, it is...

Reasons Why I'm finally throwing in the towel. I've fought against shutting down our Church because I believe it is a good thing to be in Church to worship, to learn, and to fellowship with likeminded people. I understand that "worship" can be anytime, anywhere, and any place. You do not have to be in Church to worship. The same can be said of learning. Bibles come in many sizes and formats. You can have one with you all the time, and learning about God from it is available wherever you are. The third one, fellowship, isn't quite as easy with...
President Trump With the advent of the Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic, and as we emerge from this crisis, severe thought and deliberation should be given to holding China responsible, not only morally but financially. China likes to consider itself as a first-world nation. Yet, it continues internal practices, which are ancient and more akin to third-world status, not compatible with a first world classification. There can be no denying that China is responsible for the current pandemic, as they were in the 2003 SARS epidemic, which originated in...
Schools and Families Lead Their Communities Through Unprecedented Circumstances This week, I had a conversation with U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to discuss national responses to the COVID-19 outbreak and how the U.S. Department of Education can assist Montana schools. I encouraged flexibility for Montana schools. We also discussed equitable alternative education delivery and what that looks like in rural Montana, especially for special education and other at-risk student groups. As communities across Montana were forced to rapidly...
It goes without saying that we are living through some unprecedented and novel times. The economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic are presenting tremendous challenges for every Montanan, health challenges not seen for at least a century. Further, these uncertain times bring to mind the financial services uncertainties and questions faced by Americans in the 1930s – such as will I have access to my bank accounts during this time, what will happen with my mortgage, and are my deposits properly insured against loss. Given t...
By Rob Natelson On March 23, the City of Denver issued a “stay at home” order designed to check the spread of COVID-19. The order prohibits travel and most business and recreational activities, subject to a long list of exceptions. It suffers from serious constitutional defects and should be challenged in court. As a preliminary matter, I should say that, like many bureaucratic pronouncements, this decree seems to have been thrown together by people with inadequate understanding of the complexities of life and under political pressure. For exa...

The Social Security Office of the Inspector General has received reports that Social Security beneficiaries have received letters through the U.S. Mail stating their payments will be suspended or discontinued unless they call a phone number referenced in the letter. Scammers may then mislead beneficiaries into providing personal information or payment via retail gift cards, wire transfers, internet currency, or by mailing cash, to maintain regular benefit payments during this period of COVID-19 office closures. Social Security will not suspend...
MONTANA – Governor Steve Bullock today implemented actions to increase the ability of commercial motor carrier vehicles to ensure a supply of food, medical supplies, farm inputs and feed and hay during the COVID-19 emergency. The Directive is not in response to shortages of food supplies. Montana’s food supply chain is essential and state and federal food safety inspectors are on the job. Additionally, licensed food manufacturers are operating and plan to continue operating at or above capacity. At this time, any shortages of food observed in...
No matter where you garden there never seems to be enough time to grow all the fresh vegetables desired. Planting earlier or just providing plants with some added warmth on chilly days and nights can reduce the time from planting to harvest. Southern gardeners will enjoy the additional time for harvesting heat-sensitive plants before the stifling heat moves in and plants begin to decline. Prepare the soil as soon as it can be worked. Cover the prepared soil with clear plastic, row covers or high tunnels for several weeks when planting earlier t...

By Lauren Meier - The Washington Times Calls on Capitol Hill are mounting for the State Department to investigate China’s alleged efforts to cover up the initial spread of the coronavirus outbreak that has swept the world, killing thousands in its wake. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday, Rep. Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is urging the department to consider launching a multilateral investigation with other democratic countries to look into any moves to cover up the c...
The coronavirus (COVID-19) is requiring many adjustments in people’s lifestyles. For the 51,000 Montanans providing care for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease, the need to observe appropriate social distancing means that many of the day-to-day activities they might participate in with their loved ones – the 22,000 Montanans living with the disease – must be adapted for the time being. Until conditions allow for more travel outside the home, the Alzheimer’s Association of Montana offers 38 meaningful and fun ways to spend time with...
In 1909 Ira Carey concluded that he and wife, Bessie, should have a ranch of their own, and he managed to scrape together a year of his hired man's wages, $500, to purchase one. With that half-section and a cabin as home base, he continued to work for others and used that income to purchase cattle and begin building a herd. Further, he added to his property through claims under the Desert Land Act, an 1877 law that allowed people to irrigate and claim arid, public land. He even bought the place...
