A long, long time ago in good ole Roundup, a Miner named Charlie Thomas along with Curlee Mihalovich, built the building that would become the Arcade bar. Arriving in Roundup in 1908, Charlie worked for a spell in the No. Three mines, perhaps building up relations with his future customer base. He then started up three bars, one of which was the Mint, and finally the Arcade with his compadre Curlee. As fate would have it, they had hardly begun the new bar when the doggone prohibition came into e...
Recap: Adam is describing the taxing and spending authority of county government and how the commissioners find a balance. “Mills' values can change if their value goes up or down. We can spend different dollar amounts for certain services without going to ask for an increase in the mill levy. Property taxes are based on the square footage of your home or acreage. Individuals that live within the city also pay city taxes. Most of the county expenditures are paid by the agricultural community. The people that live east of Roundup pay most of the...

Our Name is MUD Now that we have your attention, do you really know what we do? Every year you get a flier in the mail from M.U.D. Our name is the Musselshell Unity Drive. We bring together non-profit organizations in our area to help all citizens of Roundup and Musselshell County. Over the next few weeks, I’ll profile the organizations that are participants in M.U.D. for 2021. When that flier comes around this year, take the time to decide which organization you would like to support. Or perhaps you’d like to give a little to each. It’s your...
Jesus Holds it Together Imagine yourself driving down the highway at 70 miles per hour. You meet someone driving in the opposite direction, and they are traveling at 70 miles per hour. You go past each other at maybe 10 to 20 feet apart or perhaps even less at a combined speed of 140 miles per hour. Do you ever stop and wonder what could go wrong? If you stop and think about it, there are quite a few factors involved, and many are out of your control. Complete control is the most crucial factor. Let's play a little pool. If you rack the balls...
Thank God we have at least one member in the GOP who has wisdom and guts pertaining to the Democrat party. GOP Congressman Louie Gohmert has introduced a BAN on the party to continue to use the name "Democrat !" As these Progressive Socialst communist continue to push and allow the destruction of cities and our history, why should they keep a name that President Andrew Jackson gave this side of American politics. Obviously when members of the Left party, like Ilhan Omar,Rashida Thliab and AOC,want our beloved nation to fall into commie...
Accessing truth is getting increasingly difficult. The political world has divided into two camps. Almost no outlet is interested in the middle anymore. Leftist publications give leftist propaganda and use leftist fact checkers to authenticate it. The same exists for rightist publications. Take voter fraud in mail-in balloting for example, virtually all Democrats see no crime, or possibility of crime in it, and advocate national mail in voting for 2020. Virtually all Republicans see voter fraud as an outcome and a way to rig elections for the...
By Sen. Cary Smith & Sen. Doug Kary Montana’s economy has wilted and withered since the so-called pandemic arrived in early March. Our “wannabe president/wannabe senator/lame duck governor” has done little except bankrupt main street merchants. Revenues for state government are sinking. As veteran state legislators and members of the Senate Finance and Claims Committee, this troubles us. It appears that our state coffers are being drained so the next legislature will inherit serious red ink. President Trump, Sen. Steve Daines and Congr...
I am optimistic for the coming school year. I would rather be talking about the positive vision for Montana education than the Governor’s vacant leadership lacking transparency. On March 3rd, the Governor created Montana’s Coronavirus Task Force, leaving out a significant sector impacted by COVID-19; the education community. Under pressure, the Governor’s staff allowed the Office of Public Instruction (OPI) to participate. After a few in-person and virtual meetings attended by the OPI’s school health and safety experts, the OPI received an emai...
By Jon Soderstrom, Ph.D. Scientists at Yale University and scores more research institutions nationwide are working around the clock to identify potential avenues of diagnosing, preventing, and treating COVID-19. Many of these projects are backed by the federal government's National Institutes of Health. Any one of them could lead to a game-changing insight that helps end this pandemic. For any of these efforts to succeed, however, it will take more than government-funded laboratory research. The reality is that in the United States, medical...
From MSU News Service BOZEMAN — A new video from Montana State University Extension shows the impact and causes of soil acidification and offers Montana farmers management options to prevent, adapt to or correct acidic soil, which can lead to heavy yield losses. “Soil acidification is an emerging issue in Montana, where low soil pH has traditionally not been a concern,” said Clain Jones, MSU Extension’s soil fertility specialist and professor in the MSU College of Agriculture’s Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences. Jones sai...

Enjoy the spicy heat hot peppers add to your meals without concern for the many myths surrounding these garden vegetables. Here are a few you may have heard but are not true. Growing both hot and sweet peppers in the garden will not add spicy heat to the sweet varieties. Peppers are normally self-pollinated. If an insect happens to move the pollen from a hot to sweet pepper, it will not affect the flavor or heat of this year’s harvest. If you save the seeds from a cross-pollinated pepper for next year’s garden there is no guarantee on the...
Michael Moore, the documentary film-maker is at it again. Viewers can count on him to create controversy. His films usually take aim at subjects that often involve a powerful player abusing a smaller player, such as “Where’s Roger”, a film about General Motors and its CEO. In that film the CEO appears to treat some employees of GM and the city of Flint, Michigan with heartless disdain. Or “Fahrenheit 9/11” which delves into the terrorist attack of 9/11. Or “Sicko” which purports to examine our heathcare system. Moore is the executive pro...

MONTANA – Governor Steve Bullock today issued a directive to provide flexibility for local school districts to provide remote or offsite education in order to protect students and teachers from the spread of COVID-19 when schools reopen this fall. “As fall approaches, schools are working hard to plan for the school year in light of the ongoing pandemic. Many districts may choose to offer a blend of in-classroom and remote learning to balance safety with the educational needs of their students,” said Governor Bullock. “This directive will en...
