Some folks have seen a team of horses haying along highway 87 earlier this year. You might think this rancher is going to great lengths to save on fuel with the prices being so high, but Jim Quade just loves his team of horses, and likes to have the chance to keep them trained and working. I received a special invitation to come watch three teams haying at Ken and Daphne Kuhlmann's ranch. Jim sold Ken his swather, and Ken loaned Jim his horse team. They got together to swath Ken's field on...
Every day on modern media we hear how China is over taking the United States in world leadership. What we do not hear are the problems that China has and is facing in it's future. Yes, maybe and that is a long winded maybe, we could see China become the worlds largest economy in 2030.China will never establish a meaningful lead and would remain further behind in productivity even as far as the year 2050. The reason, the Chinese population is changing and so is China's work force. In 2020 China had a population of 1.402 billion people. China has...
I wanted to write in and note the passing on Aug 2, 2022 of Vin Scully at the age of 94. During my Sojurn through the Southland (read California) many years ago I ran onto Vin when my roomates were watching a Dodger game on TV. "Turn down the sound" they said "Vin Scully's broadcasting on the radio". My reaction then was the same as the one you probably just had when you read the first line of this letter. "Vin who?", I thought. Over the next years and decades I found out Vin who. I got to know Vin Scully like most people did, through his play...
During the 2021 Legislature, we set a budget to adequately fund state government operations. It turns out that the State Treasury received a lot more tax revenue than we projected. In almost every area, tax receipts have exceeded our expectations. The cause of that can be debated, but it does not change the fact the state is sitting on an estimated $1.5 Billion cash surplus. That surplus is in addition to over $800 million in rainy day funds. This leaves your elected leaders with a very important decision: should the surplus go back to the...

In light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, Governor Greg Gianforte today urged the Montana Supreme Court to accept new briefings from the public as the court weighs challenges to pro-life laws. The Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, returning the authority to regulate abortion to the people of each state and their elected representatives. In its 1999 Armstrong v. State decision, the Montana Supreme Court relied on Roe in recognizing a right to abortion in Montana. In his motion Gov. Gianforte wrote, ...
