  • Pastor's Corner - Who Makes the Rules?

    Sep 11, 2019

Do you remember when you were a child? You used to play kids games and depending on where you were at and who you were playing with, you would eventually run into another kid or group of kids who played the same game but with different rules. An argument generally follows with both sides claiming ultimate knowledge to the right rules of the game. Somebody either gives in, and the rules change, or someone picks up their toys and goes home. But understand that there is a rule book somewhere for about every game. Those are the rules by which we ar...

  • REPENT!

    Sep 11, 2019

How often we hear that word, but do we know what it means? It comes from a combination of 2 Greek words-meta, which means change, and noyia which means your mind. Change your mind. Sounds simple doesn’t it. But as humans we get set in our ways and our thinking so we only listen to those who agree with us and never think about changing our minds. About anything. Well, God changed my mind long ago and is still changing it. My dad used to yell at me all the time. He had such a loud vocie that he could yell at the referee half-way down the b...

  • Letter to Editor

    Sep 11, 2019

I am not sure if the community is aware of how many officers have been hired and then let go before their probationary period is over. To my knowledge, 1 officer was encouraged to resign once the new Sheriff took office. And, since Sheriff Lesnik’s hiring, he has hired and then let go 2 new officers. The two new officers is what I’m concerned about. These new officers appeared to be individuals who wanted to support changes within the department. These individuals both understood the community’s frustration with “protecting the good old boy...

  • Wait who's trying to beat climate change?

    Paul E Vallely|Sep 11, 2019

The energy industry is waging war against climate change -- and winning. This week, the Environmental Partnership, a group of oil and gas firms dedicated to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, released its first annual progress report. The results are impressive -- and showcase what happens when an industry unites to further the public good. The Environmental Partnership launched in late 2017 with 26 members. Within 12 months, it more than doubled in size to 58 members -- including 32 of America's top 40 oil and gas producers. Today, its members...

  • Ignorance of the Electoral College Could Destroy It

    Harold Pease PhD|Sep 11, 2019

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently fed a video to Instagram of her driving through an uninhabited rural area sarcastically saying “many votes … are out there,” mocking the Electoral College. Such ignorance could destroy it and our republic. Those in this camp prefer the popular vote but without the College a close race would make the election far less settled and result in massive civil unrest perhaps even civil war. The Electoral College legitimizes the outcome. In the 2016 presidential election Trump won 304 electoral votes to Clint...

  • A Tour Through the Lavina Adams Hotel

    Lura Pitman|Sep 11, 2019

Many may have passed the flyer for the Adams Hotel open house for the first weekend of September. I have long been fascinated with the hotel and was very excited to tour the inside. Traveling out on a warm, sunny, Sunday, we attended this open house. Outside, cars filled the parking lot. The smell of barbeque on the side of the tattered hotel was drawing people to eat. The hotel porch was bustling with people laughing and visiting as though it had been open for years. One could almost imagine...

  • A semi truck hauling a wind generator blade

    Sep 11, 2019

A semi truck hauling a wind generator blade became stuck at the intersection of Main Street and Eighth Avenue for about an hour Thursday morning. These blades, built in Texas, are on their way to Geyser Montana. They are longer than the ones that have passed through Roundup before making clearance with telephone poles, signs and the Big Sky Motel building at the intersection very tight. With some maneuvering, the first truck, measuring a bit over 230 feet from the front bumper to the end of the...

  • Dallying, Dust, Desperados, and Darn Good Rodeo Ingomar Ranch Rodeo 'Kicks it' Labor Day weekend!

    Linda Lou Crosby|Sep 11, 2019

It was a challenging weekend for the Ladies, the Youth and the Open teams at the 5th Annual Ingomar Ranch Rodeo as the stock, feeling pretty happy after getting fat and sassy on this year’s grass, the dust kicked up from the welcome breeze, and the challenge of roping, riding, milking, branding, sorting, doctoring and bucking (not only during the ranch bronc ride, but from some contestant horses as well) led to a heck of an event. The contestants, the judges, the announcer, the volunteers and the crowd were ‘all in’ from the first notes of th...

  • BERTIE BROWN'S RANCH AND ENTERPRISES

    Larry and Jane Stanfel|Sep 11, 2019

Known locally as Nigger Bertie, by all reports she generally was regarded with affection, respect, and, for some of her works, downright admiration. She was a jolly, good-natured soul, rather short and heavy-set, but what endeared her most to the citizens was not her kindness, it was her booze. People claimed hers was the absolute best produced anywhere in the U.S. of A. Since it was the good ole days of Prohibition, when clandestine distilleries were producing moonshine everywhere across our...
