  • HOMESTEAD HOLIDAYS or BUST!

Recall those years when we use to enjoy the sights of campers and summer travelers with big signs posted on their vehicles about where they were headed. Seems everyone had to let the world know where we were voyaging to enjoy our free moments from work. Sometimes it was just a huge bus loaded with sports fans heading to state games to cheer on favorite players. If signs weren’t painted they soaped the windows with the phrases of the places they were journeying towards. Road miles seemed to s...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Oct 2, 2019

Prayer Request It is said that God can do anything and use anything for His purposes. I believe that. And here’s WHY. Last February was a very cold and snowy month. The snow got to be very deep and the snow got very high. Yet, there was a story cat who began living in my barn. Not only did I feed him a can of Friskies every day, but he went over to my neighbor’s and ate the food she put outside for her cat. I was sure that night it got to be 27 below 0 that he would freeze to death, but there he was, still alive and kicking. I already had 2 c...

  • USMCA will spur medical breakthroughs

    Kenneth E Thorpe|Oct 2, 2019

Mexico recently ratified the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the mammoth trade deal that could replace NAFTA. U.S. lawmakers would be wise to follow suit -- the pact could save and improve millions of Americans' lives by spurring the development of cutting-edge medicines. One of the deal's most important provisions would strengthen intellectual property protections for an innovative class of medicines called biologics. Biotech companies manufacture these large-molecule drugs from living organisms like animal or plant cells. Doctors use...

  • Brexit: What Is at Stake?

    Dr. Mark W. Hendrickson|Oct 2, 2019

I feel badly for the people of the United Kingdom. Brexit – the move to withdraw the UK from the European Union – has left the United Kingdom anything but united. Even families are being ripped apart. The most notable involves Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s own family. His brother Jo (a fine fellow whom I met several years ago) resigned his seat in Parliament and his place in his brother’s cabinet because he wanted to remain and Boris wants to leave. There are solid arguments in favor of both “remain” and “leave.” On the “remain” side a...

  • Microsoft's Misleading Message

    Oct 2, 2019

The Missoulian recently published a Guest Opinion, titled “Lack of Internet Access is holding rural communities back. Students, too.” First, I have total respect for the guest writer who submitted the op-ed. And second, I am 100 percent in agreement with the guest writer’s underlying interest in facilitating access to advanced broadband connectivity to all Montanans. Broadband connectivity benefits all walks of life: education, health care, emergency services, government services, commerce, entertainment, etc. Broadband is a critical econo...

    Oct 2, 2019

(Helena, Mont.)—United Property Owners of Montana issues the following statement by spokesperson Chuck Denowh in response to the APR's decision to revise their Livestock Change In Use application to the BLM. APR has changed the application from eighteen BLM allotments to one, reducing the scope of the change from 290,000 acres to 12,000. "For over a decade, APR has been advancing a plan to establish a free-roaming bison herd and eliminate the existing ranching communities that occupy the area they want under their control. None of that has chan...

Pick a few flowers and freeze them in ice cube trays to serve in your favorite beverage. Or float them on top of your favorite seasonal punch. They will brighten any occasion, especially when snow is in the forecast. Set a few flowers on a bed of greens for unique flavor and added color. Or garnish your entrée. Just be sure to tell your...

It is time for residents of Musselshell and Golden Valley Counties to be on the lookout for Ventenata and be proactive on keeping it out of our Counties. • THE BEECHER RANCH AND STAGECOACH STOP

    Larry and Jane Stanfel|Oct 2, 2019

A little east of the Grass Range area is perhaps the most variously owned and used land and buildings in our entire series. Long before homesteads, in the 1880s, when stops were about 15 miles apart, the distance covered in one day, it was a stagecoach stop on the Ft. Benton – Billings line. Coaches carried passengers, gold-mining equipment, and supplies for places like Gilt Edge, Flat Willow, and Musselshell. In the picture, "The Stage Station," the foreground building was the hotel, with s...

  • 'Dire famine' by 1975: Experts Chart Worst Failures in 'eco-polcalyptic' Predictions

    Jennifer Harper, The Washington Times|Oct 2, 2019

12While national leaders participate in Climate Week in New York City and elsewhere, one organization reveals the follies of some past ideas about environmental matters. “Wrong again: 50 years of failed eco-polcalyptic predictions,” wrote Myron Ebell, director, of the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Center for Energy and Environment, and Steven J. Milloy, a “junk science” expert, and climate scholar. “Modern doomsayers have been predicting climate and environmental disaster since the 1960s. They continue to do so today. None of the apocaly...
