Multiple accounts of scam calls have been reported to Montana’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). Just this month seven Montanans, believing that they were talking to Medicare, gave out their Medicare numbers. Those calls included “your Medicare number is invalid” and “Medicare is replacing cards with one that has a chip reader,” and in all cases they asked to confirm the current numbers. A direct result of people’s Medicare numbers falling into the wrong hands is the more than $21,000 in documented fraud cases sent on to the Office of Inspector G...

Understanding Holiday celebration and cheer is not a reality for everyone. The fact is many people find themselves actually feeling the opposite. Some people suffer from a disorder that we call "depression." Statistically, it is more evident at this particular time of the year. Not everyone is hooked up with family, and Lord knows that all families do not function the way that God created them to. Some are experiencing Christmas for the very first time without someone they have deeply loved, and it hurts. The daylight hours are short, and it...
Federal Land Grazers are Losing Their Vested Water Rights Ranchers running livestock on federally managed lands are facing a major taking of which few appear to be aware. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has filed thousands of water rights with the Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC). The problem is these filings conflict with the vested water rights of the allotment holders. Montana is a prior appropriation doctrine state which means, 'first in time, first in right' (miners' law). Most of the ranches using federal lands were...
It was in the eighth grade when I moved from Santa to Christ as my main focus of Christmas. I well remember the star saturated night when the heavens overwhelmingly testified of God’s awesomeness. I could feel the words of my favorite Christmas carol “Silent Night” go down into my soul as never before as I both sang and pondered its words. Perhaps it was the scenic nativity-like setting where I found myself, hand milking my neighbor’s cow while he was away for a week, the three-sided shed that allowed my gaze into the dark but star-lit, cold, c...
Supreme Court Decision On December 17, 2019, the Montana Supreme Court issued a decision in the case of Musselshell County Sheriff Shawn Lesnik vs. Ronnie Burns candidate for sheriff. The case revolved around the issue of whether or not Ronnie Burns is responsible for attorney fees incurred by Sheriff Lesnik. District Court Judge Katherine M. Bidegaray, ruled against Sheriff Lesnik's motion to recoup attorney fees through the botched recount motion instigated by Ronnie Burns's attorney Chris Gallus and the handpicked attorney Wally Congdon....

In the travel and research to collect the information that led to these articles and paintings we met good people of all sizes, shapes, and backgrounds, but only once were we greeted by a rancher with a firearm in hand. This was in 2006, northwest of Helena along Lincoln Road, and, indeed, he was admittedly suspicious of strangers, who, he said, were stealing things from him. We did our best to explain that theft was not our trade, but that we hoped to learn about the history of his ranch and to...
The Panthers hosted the Shepherd Mustangs for their first conference game of the year. It was not a great game to watch for the spectators as the offense for either team wasn’t really good but on the other hand the game was close throughout and no one should have been bored. Shepherd jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. Their leading scorer hit 5 quick points but then Brigem and Michael began to put the clamps on him. The Panthers shifted to a 2-3 zone that seemed to take the wind out of the Mustangs sails. At one time point in t...
