Congressman Matt Rosendale (MT-02) sent a letter to the Director of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Martha Williams, requesting information regarding an unprecedented and covert action being undertaken by the service, in conjunction with the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Nature Conservancy, and potentially other NGOs and private actors, to substantially limit public and private use of 5.8 million acres in Montana under the guise of “conservation.” “This is a topic that significantly affects Montanans,” said Rep. The federal Credit Card Competition Act of 2023 (CCCA) has been touted as a means to reducing the credit card interchange fees businesses pay to process credit card transactions. But as can often be the case, government schemes to intervene in free-market transactions inevitably create distortions, misaligned incentives, and unintended consequences. Unfortunately, the CCCA would create more problems than it purports to solve. Interchange fees aren't just arbitrary costs. They cover a plethora of services: fraud protection, transaction...

Earlier this year, William Smith writes at the Pioneer Institute, "[t]he federal government announced the formation of a working group to 'develop a framework for the implementation of the march-in provision of the Bayh-Dole Act.'" Smith thinks it's a bad idea -- the title of his piece is "University Science Research Is Under Threat." The very simplified version: Under the 1980 Bayh-Dole Act, universities can use taxpayer money to do research, then patent any useful results and make bank on their discoveries by licensing those patents to...
