The Melstone Area Foundation (MAF) has been notified that the digitizing of Melstone's newspapers has been completed. Interested persons may now go online to montananewspapers.org and read all the available editions from 1911 through 1939. A search for a particular name or topic can be performed.
Some of Melstone's newspapers were already on microfilm. Through a recent grant from Montana Humanities for the process of microfilming the remaining issues and a grant from the Montana History Foundation for the digitizing step, the Montana Historical Society was able to complete the work.
Through the years there had been several periods of time when no newspaper was published in Melstone. But editions of the Melstone Graphic (1911-12) and the Melstone Messenger (1914-16; 1918; and 1922-39) are all digitized. No editions of the earlier Melstone Mirror (1909-1911) have been located.
Now that the project is completed, the Montana Historical Society will store and host the newspapers at montananewspapers.org. Viewers can go to that website and search for a time period which interests them or a topic of interest or a family name. The resulting finds can be sorted by relevance, title, or date. Students may find the site useful for a research project.
