Flatwillow Homemakers met at Ginger Moore’s home on October 8. A potluck lunch was enjoyed by all. There were no birthdays celebrated in October. Sandi called the meeting to order and led the Pledge to the Flag. Ginger read the thought for the day called “Fun facts about Halloween”. Roll call answered with what is your favorite Halloween candy.
There was more discussion of the Homemakers quilt we are putting together. Sandi will drop it off with Linda for the next part of putting the quilt together. Ginger had the scrapbook out for everyone to look at.
Under new business, there was discussion of what we would like to do for our seniors’ group. Luann and Ginger will make the Rice Krispy treat pumpkins. Sandi will bring the rolos, green M & M’s, and liner paper. We will discuss what we would like to do this year for our Christmas project, at the next meeting. Secret sister gifts were handed out. Everyone enjoyed seeing what each other received.
Bonnie won the blind pig. The next meeting will be at Luann’s on November 12, 2019. We won’t have opportunity table or secret sister gifts at this meeting. Minutes were taken by Raye Anne, as Donna was absent today. Raye Anne, Jean Cook, Sandi Gonzalez, Luann Knutson, Bonnie Moore, Ginger Moore, Lillian Moore, and Florence Wacker were all there. We missed several of our members due to illness, or being gone, or in Melody’s case, she was substituting teaching at school. Hope the weather is nice and everyone is able to come to Luann’s for our next meeting.
Our community sends out our sympathy to the family of Dennis Manley. He passed away and we send comforting prayers to his wife Denise and family.
The Petroleum County Community Center board has been working hard to organize fundraisers, finalize ideas for our community center, and work on getting grants, and donations for our center. We received a wonderful gift from a Winnett High School graduate of 1958. Larry Carroll gifted $5 million dollars to our community center. He went to college at the University of Wyoming after graduation and worked in the oil and gas fields until he retired. What a generous and thoughtful gift to give to his hometown. We may be a small community, but we have big dreams and now we are beginning to put those dreams into reality. Thank you, Larry. Thank you also to the board of the PCCC for all your hard work to make our dreams come true.
Hunting season started earlier in the fall with archery, but we are seeing more and more hunters in this area now that rifle season has begun for antelope. We had several different groups of our friends hunting this past weekend. It is so fun when all these guys come. The weather was nice, they brought their kids for a mini vacation. We don’t get to see these friends as also as we would like, but we can usually count on them to make it out for hunting. We had our friends from Great Falls camping in our yard, and our friends from the Helena area camping on us on Kelly Road. All of them had kids along, who had a blast. None of the kids were old enough to hunt, but they had all kinds of room to and play and run. They loved helping me do my barn chores and were fascinated by our turkeys. Wish I had that kind of energy. I’m not sure our cats were as thrilled to be mauled and carried everywhere, but our dogs sure enjoyed playing. A busy weekend for us.
The Grass Range/Winnett Ranger Jr. High football team has finished its season. They had a great season. I believe they were undefeated. It will be exciting to see them grow in the next few years and get to the high school level. What a talented group of kids we have coming up. Our Lady Ranger volleyball team, both Jr High and High School are doing great. The Jr. High/elementary season has finished, and they also had a good season. Our high school team is doing well. Hard to believe our football, cross country, and volleyball seasons are winding down, and now everyone is getting prepared for basketball to begin.
This year sophomores, juniors, and seniors had the chance to attend the college fair in Lewistown. Students had the chance to visit with colleges that they may have never consolidated without this chance.
The Winnett Music program will be putting on their Veteran’s Day concert on November 11 at 2:00pm. They will continue to show pictures of Veterans that are from Winnett or have a connection with our students (family or friends). They would like to expand their slideshow each year to honor those that have served. If you have any pictures, please drop them off at the Winnett school office. Congratulations to three of our band students who attended MSU Band Day on September 21, 2019. These students spent the morning with the Spirit of the West Marching Band preparing to perform with them at the Bobcats football game that afternoon. Katie Zimmerman, Molly Nunn and Gracie Gill were a part of the “M” of the band. They performed in the pre-game show, participated in the half-time show, and also played in the stands during the game. What a fantastic experience for our students.
There is an evening beginning quilting class for those that are interested. Instructors are Linda Gershmel, and Melody Whitcher. They started last Thursday evening, October 10 and will run every Thursday from 6-8pm, until November 21. The focus will be beginning quilting techniques that creates a star sampler table runnier, small quilt or wall hanging. All sewing levels are welcome. Contact the Winnett School to sign up and get a list of class supplies. Sewing machine and some tools are available.
Everyone have a safe fall, watch out for deer on the highway, there seems to be a lot of them grazing the road ditches, and enjoy what fall we have left. Have a wonderful Halloween.
