Sand Springs, Montana

Even though Sand Springs, is a dot on the map 70 some odd miles from Roundup, Montanans know that Sand Springs is still our community. I had been planning to do a little story on some tiny country schools, one of which is the Sand Springs school, when the Wuhan virus shut our schools down. After the third week I was itching for a drive, and I decided to visit the little Country Store RV Park and Post Office at Sand Springs. As I drove up there wasn't a car in sight. Sky, land and highway stretch on from horizon to horizon and in the middle is the Sand Springs store. We walked in and were greeted with I hello, and "I was just watching the governor announcement on reopening Montana."

The owner/operator/Post Master, Sandy Gibson, started working in the store in 1984. Her husband was from the Sand Springs area and they moved back after they were married. Eventually getting their own ranch. Her children all attended the Sand Springs k-8 country school.

The little Post Office was originally started in the 1911 and the store was to begin a few decades later in the 1950's, according to Sandy. Sand Springs as a community originated at the turn of the century with sheep, cattle and horse ranchers. Sandy mentioned that it was being considered to become the county seat at one point, however Jordan became the county seat in 1919. Still, a great stop along a long lonely road, a rest for weary travelers. You will find a friendly smile and welcome at the Sand Springs store.
