Hello everyone. I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. Flatwillow Homemakers will meet again September 8, 2020. We will determine later in the summer who would like to host the September meeting. Donna will be calling everyone this month to keep everyone informed and begin to set up who would like to host our September meeting. It will be secret sister revealing and drawing for new secret sisters, opportunity table, and filling out our booklets. Linda picked up the quilt from Laura Finkbeiner. She did a beautiful job. Linda will get the quilt to Melody to do the backing. We will suggest to Melody to bring the quilt to the September meeting to let us all see the quilt and get a picture to put in the scrap book. Then we will take it to the courthouse to be hung up. Linda has seen it and said it was beautiful. I can’t wait to see it. Thank you to all of us for our work in getting a new Flatwillow Homemakers quilt done. Thank you especially to Bonnie, Linda, and Melody for spearheading this project and encouraging all of us to complete our squares and arranging for the quilting to be done. We are so lucky to be a part of Homemakers with a great group of ladies. I can’t wait to see everyone in September.
Congratulations to Chuck and Bonnie Allen on 50 years of wedded bliss. Their family put together a wonderful potluck and social time in Winnett to celebrate. There was a lot of family and a good turnout from the Winnett Community that came to say Congratulations. It was great to see both Chuck and Bonnie and visit with friends from near and far.
The Tasha Keith Softball Tournament was held August 1 and 2nd at the Winnett Rodeo Grounds turned into a softball field. There are eight teams entered this year. Normally the tournament is held in June, but due to Covid restrictions, it was moved to August. Good luck to everyone.
We had to say goodbye to a longtime resident of Winnett and Petroleum County. Donnis Doman died last Sunday. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be at a later date. He was a good neighbor and friend. I will miss hearing about his stories and life growing up in this area. He will be missed by all his friends and family. We all are thinking of you during this difficult time.
Winnett School was able to hold their prom on Saturday, July 18. The girls all looked so beautiful in their prom dresses, and the guys all looked nice. It was great that our history teacher Mr. Oshnock was able to organize and put together the prom and for our math teacher Mrs. Sheryll Cuarto for helping chaperone. It was so nice to be able to hold prom for all these students who were not allowed to have one in April or May. They were able to have fun dancing and laughing and enjoying being together with their friends and classmates.
Now on to some school news. Tentative start date for Winnett School is August 24. MHSA has said sports activities may go on with precautions and modifications. However, All State Band, Choir, and Orchestra scheduled for October has been canceled and will not be re-scheduled for this academic year. This does not include Music Festival which is held in the spring. It is still on the schedule at the moment. High school cross country, football, and volleyball practice starts on Friday, August 14. Jr. High football and volleyball practice begins on Monday, August 17. Make sure you have your sports physicals turned in and on file before practice begins or you will not be able to practice. Letters from the coaches will be sent out shortly with more information.
Welcome to Lindsey Wilkerson, our new school superintendent. We also welcome Kyle Hubbard to Winnett as our new music teacher. Be sure to put August 7 on your calendar. A potluck, BBQ and street dance are planned for main street in Winnett. It will be from 6pm to 12am. There will be a cash bar. Kyle Shobe will be here putting on live music for the dancing. It will be a family friendly event for everyone. Bring your own chairs, your favorite summer dish and come out for a great social gathering. It is hosted by Jess Hoge and Katie Lund. Hope everyone had a great haying season in spite of the grasshoppers. They have sure chomped gardens, flowers, and hay for the cows. We could use a 3 day rain soaker to help curb those grasshoppers. Stay safe everyone and see you next time.
Senior Citizens have not been able to meet since spring. Thank you to Patti and Cassie for preparing take-out meals for our seniors. They hope to be able to begin meeting in person by September, but until then, they will continue to fix good take-outs and deliver them to those that want them. Thank you all!
