Jesus Holds it Together
Imagine yourself driving down the highway at 70 miles per hour. You meet someone driving in the opposite direction, and they are traveling at 70 miles per hour. You go past each other at maybe 10 to 20 feet apart or perhaps even less at a combined speed of 140 miles per hour. Do you ever stop and wonder what could go wrong? If you stop and think about it, there are quite a few factors involved, and many are out of your control. Complete control is the most crucial factor. Let's play a little pool. If you rack the balls and shoot the “cue” ball, how often will all the balls go into the pockets? It is not likely to happen because there are too many surfaces involved that can minutely be altered and cause failure. What if I told you that a comedian in the earlier part of the 1900’s solved that problem? WC Fields had a vaudeville routine where he would rack the pool balls and shot and sink them all in that one shot. What was his secret? He had a way to control all of them. He fastened a hidden string to each ball. He had an accomplice hidden under the table who pulled the balls into all the pockets by the strings. When Field’s shot, he had complete control.
Let's go bigger! All the stars and the planets in our solar system exist without bumping into each other. Or falling from space. That doesn't quite make sense to me if it all came into existence with an out of control, "Big bang." When control is lost, things tend toward chaos. Where did the authority come from to bring it to order? As a creationist. I suggest that there was always control because God is the creator who has always been in control. Colossians 1:15-17 tells us, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” The context tells us that we are talking about Jesus, God the Son. God in three persons (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit) created everything. It was orderly and purposely designed and created. Even though sin has left its impact, there is still order in God's creation, and He exhibits ultimate control over it. And because He is the All-powerful One, I can trust that He will hold it all together. WC Fields could control the pool balls with strings and an accomplice. God can hold all of creation together because He has the power and the wisdom to do what He has promised to do. God is ultimately in control. In this world, we live in, that tends toward chaos, it gives me confidence that there is God who is in control .
