Carmen Pitman
I am always amazed at the jobs that you would never even imagine exist. Carmen Pitman does one such job. Every business has rules and regulations that they have to follow. Transportation has their own set of regulations that must be met. Carmen Pitman, owner of Oxbow Consulting has her own small business working with companies and drivers doing D.O.T. and Safety Compliance Consulting.
Her consulting can be for any vehicles requiring commercial vehicle tax, anything requiring permits or that falls under FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). Basically, anything that requires authorities and permits. Carmen has been in the transportation business for 20 years. She officially began in Kansas, and has transferred to Roundup two years ago.
Her transition into this career began as a teenager when her family grew some really great hay crops and they were trying to get it trucked but having complications. They had trucks on the ranch near Cat Creek Montana. Her grandmother was having some trouble and Carmen began helping her grandmother figuring out the trucking business. Soon her grandmother put her in charge. Carmen was working with trucking for several years, and even drove truck for a while. She kept learning as she went. Truckers she knew kept getting into trouble and asking her what to do, and it dawned on her that this could become a potential career. Instead of giving away free advice and doing the paperwork for them half the time, she began doing it as a sideline to her other work, and earning money while helping others out. Business picked up and she began the consulting business full time.
Trucks and driver always have to be in compliance for every load. Carmen works with all types of trucking clientele. Many customers come to her after having problems with FMC or issues that may have fallen through the cracks. This client may prefer hourly consulting. If they have an issue that they don't know how to fix, she can either fix the issue or consult on how to fix the issue for an hourly rate. If an audit shows an out of compliance, she will work to fix the issues even after the issue. Trucking is a challenging business, there is tons of compliance. She can be hired on monthly retainer for a flat rate, per month, per truck. For this type of client, she does everything; trip permits, oversize, overweight, envelope permits, or renew authorities, IFTA, she will take care of all MCS150 UCR filings, and do annual audit with no extra charge for retainer clients. For an example, Carmen has had customers call her at a scale house saying that they will not let them through, what do I do...sometimes it's as simple as not having the correct permit. She provides full service with everything that pertains to trucking, including navigating through an accident or insurance issues. She can help with the process of the accident report, and so forth.
This year truckers have had more difficulties because of Covid-19. Just getting a place to eat, fuel, and other necessities have been a challenge, particularly this spring when shutdowns began. The phone call load for her this spring was heavy due to trying to figure out regulations due to the pandemic.
Carmen does have room for a few new clients. You do not have to be in this state for Carmen to work with your business. She works with all 50 states and has experience with border work as well. If you would like to learn more about her services she can be reached at 620-352-0948 or [email protected].
