Dorwin Schreuder, Montana Author

One fine day in mid-May, I was just closing up at the office when a fellow named Dorwin Schreuder walked in asking if we do book reviews in our paper. I said we had not, but we surely could consider it.

Thinking Dorwin was going to be adding some weekly commentary on books I was surprised when he presented "As the Twig is Bent" a book that he himself had written. He was here in Roundup to get a cover photo from along the Musselshell River for the sequel he just finished called, "Just Across the River". He proceeded to tell me that "As the Twig is Bent" is the first novel he has ever written, and he was self-publishing the story through Amazon.

Dorwin grew up in Huntley Project and went on to have a career in the FBI. His grandson wrote a book called "Grandpa's Diary", about Dorwin, and shared some of Dorwin's journals that he kept during his career with the FBI. After he retired, he used his love for writing and his lifelong interest in the local area and its history, and wrote his first yarn. Dorwin gave me a copy of his book, and a copy of the sequel to read.

"As the Twig is Bent" is an entrancing debut story about the endurance and fortitude of a youth left to survive on his own in the later 1800's in central Montana. A tale of adventure for the young and old alike. Dorwin's sequel, "Just Across the River" will satisfy the thirst for more about the heart-warming characters Toby and Julie. Dorwin's character, Toby, is very realistic in his struggle, and the difficulties of his situation. The first novel takes place between the Musselshell River and the Yellowstone River in 1881. Dorwin weaves history into the story with the beginnings of the North Pacific Railroad in the Yellowstone area and Coulson, and the Roundup Musselshell area. The book is written in first person point of view.

I am reminded of our friend Larry Stanfel, who wrote a book called "The Tender Care Murders", and wrote articles about local homesteads for the Roundup Record for about a year. Larry and his wife were a great hit with our readers. Larry's book is also available on Amazon, as well as a couple copies at the Roundup Record. There may be other authors in our area self-publishing, I am always surprised at the talent in our community.

I am pleased to present Dorwin Schreuder to our readers. It is nice to find a new author who has wholesome characters and an engaging plot. I hope that he and others who are writing will be inspired to continue.
