Roundup Memory Cafe

By Victoria Hallowell

Memory Cafes are a comfortable, social gathering that allow people experiencing memory loss and a loved one/caregiver to connect, socialize, and build new support networks.

A Memory Cafe is a safe and comfortable space where caregivers and their loved ones can socialize, listen to music, play games, and enjoy other appropriate activities. Memory Cafes provide mutual support and exchange information about additional resources. It will be a place where people can have informal conversation to create new friendships and to participate in exercises that foster reminiscing.

A Memory Cafe is a wonderfully welcoming place for individuals with Alzheimer's Disease or any other form of dementia, or other brain disorders. They are designed to include the care partner as well, for a shared experience. Additionally, it is helpful for people with all forms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI.)

Each month we will focus on different aspects for a unique experience. We will have activities, education, music and dancing, crafts, and painting. There truly is something for everyone!

While a Memory Cafe is beneficial for those living with dementia, it is also beneficial for their caregivers as well. It is not a place to “drop off” your loved one for a while, but a way to enjoy activities with them as a break from the normal routine that you share.

They can simply enjoy the company of those with similar things in common.

Activities are varied but tend to focus on topics that are apt to cause one to reminisce about times gone by. That "connection" to the past can be as comforting as it is medically beneficial. Emphasis often placed on activities where humor can be a central part of the enjoyment.

Roundup Memory Café will be held the third Wednesday of each month beginning on January 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Homes on the Range (in the meeting room). For more information call Vikki at Area II Agency on Aging (406) 323-1320.
