FLATWILLOW and WINNETT NEWS
Flatwillow Homemakers will begin their new year on September 13. There was discussion on where our first meeting will be held. One idea was to meet at the Yellowstone Valley Electric Co-op Community Room in Huntley with Sandy as our host. We will find out more and have a definite location before Sept 13. We will let everyone know when it has been decided where we will have it. There will be secret sister revealing and drawing of new secret sisters. We will also fill out our booklets, dues will be paid and there will be opportunity table. It will be a busy meeting plus the fun of visiting and catching up on all the news and activities of what we did this summer. We look forward to seeing everyone and getting back into the swing of our monthly meetings together.
Winnett begins the new school year on Wednesday August 17. We are trying out a new schedule this year. This will be a learning experience for everyone as we try out a 4 day school week allowing most Fridays off beginning in mid-September. The school days will be a bit longer beginning at 8:05 and ending at 3:40 every day. Breakfast will open for elementary students beginning at 7:45. This will include any Friday that is a school day. Buses will run slightly earlier. The school will be mailing out information packets to families beginning the first of August.
High school football and volleyball practice will begin on Friday, August 12. Junior High football and volleyball practice begins on Monday, August 15. Information on times and places should already be sent to parents and students.
It is so hard to believe that summer is winding down and it is time for school to begin another year. We have had more moisture this year than all of last year. Yesterday, it rained all day, a nice soaker rain. The ground just slurped it right up. Not much runoff but what a beautiful rain. I think most of us were able to hay and get a decent crop. Much better than last year when no one had anything to cut. I hope we have some September rains which will give good grazing and a good start to next year.
The Bruno & Evelyne Betti Youth Summer Program had great activities for our youth this summer. They took a field trip to Giant Springs State Park and fish hatchery. Thank you to Montana State Parks for a great program. Chief Plenty Coups State Park was another site for a fun field trip. The kids learned about the history of Native Americans, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and why the park was made – Chief Plenty Coups himself. A fun time and great history lessons while having fun. There was also the 1st annual T-ball and Little League. Thank you to Katie Delaney and Tiffany Knerr for helping organize and getting it started. Thank you to all our volunteer help from parents helping coach, to the Wrangler Bar and Ole Mercantile in Grass Range, the Winnett Bar and The Breaks in Winnett for donating money for t-shirts, donating snacks and supporting the kids. There was also a bike extravaganza organized for the kids. They had bike maintenance with Will Hollender, picked out helmets donated by Winnett School and the Spoke Shop in Billings and had them properly fitted. They learned hand signals, how to ride in town and then had racing. Prizes were donated and given for each race. Thank you to everyone who has been willing to give of their time and effort to support all the youth and their activities. I’m sure the PCCC and the Youth Program will have lots of activities lined up for the kids in their after school programs.
The Fort Peck Theatre Production of “The Country Mouse & the City Mouse” was performed in the Winnett Gym on July 18, starring Shy Iverson (Winnett Alumni), Taylor Noll, Ben Wambeke, & Chayten Pippin. It was such an entertaining and fun play. Thank you to Fort Peck Theatre for providing such a fun play for the community with free admittance and books and t-shirts for the kids. Adults and kids alike attended the play, and everyone enjoyed every minute of the laughs, songs, and outstanding acting. Also thank you to the youth program’s committee members who donated lunch and refreshments for the cast and public.
Winnett Aces is hosting several Summer of Culture events. The first one was the Cajun Cookout which brought lots of people together to celebrate culinary arts and raise money for the renovation of the old Odd Fellows Hall. Laredo Oil and Cat Creek Holdings sponsored the dinner which featured Jambalaya from Lewistown and fresh gumbo and seafood bake brought in from Louisiana. Everyone enjoyed fresh crawfish, shrimp, and crab right here in Winnett.
A few events coming up in August is the Winnett Fun Day on August 21. Registration begins at 9, events start at 10:00am. The next Sunday, August 28 is the Pasture Golf Tourney. Sign up at 1 and start playing at 2. There are a couple more Summer of Culture events sponsored by Aces coming up also. School may be starting, but summer activities haven’t finished up quite yet. I got most of the school information from our Winnett Times Newsletter.
I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer. There has been a lot going on in our community and more to come. Please everyone watch out for kids walking to school or getting on and off buses. Let’s have a fun, safe year.
