BLM to conduct Fuels-reduction Project in Petroleum County

The BLM will be conducting a fuels-reduction operation on 755 acres in Petroleum County, Montana’s Tin Can Hill Road area, northeast of Winnett, starting mid-September and continuing through early November.

Work will be conducted using mechanical methods, called mastication, involving heavy vehicles and large equipment that grinds up ladder fuels. To help ensure the safety of both the public and equipment operators, outdoor recreationists are advised to avoid entering the work areas.

The purpose of this project is to minimize ladder fuels, which greatly reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfires. The project includes reducing overstocking and encroachment of regeneration trees into historical clearings throughout the Musselshell River and Missouri River Breaks areas.
