Letters to the Editor

On Wednesday February 1, a large balloon was seen hovering over Billings airport. Residents and passengers watched the balloon in amazement. It was the same balloon that our Pentagon had been tracking as they saw it as a Chinese surveillance balloon. Our Governor Greg Gianforte,a former Navy Seal said that he wanted to"shoot it down!. The fact is,to take down a balloon this size and because of their construction, would be extremely difficult if not impossible to do. They are made to be resistant to any available weapons. The envelope of these stratospheric balloons is a plastic the thickness of a sandwich wrap, and the pressure difference between the inside and outside is the same. So to attempt to put holes in these balloons to let air out would be like ventilating a large warehouse by opening one small window. It would not work as a solution. The construction of an stratopheric balloon makes it all but invulnerable. These balloons can move at 80,000 feet, our super airforce jets like the Eagle and the Raptor have an operating altitude of 65,000 feet. So getting to the balloon would be a challenge for any modern aircraft. In 1998 a rogue Canadian weather balloon drifted toward Russia. Canadians, Norway and Sweden, all tried to stop the balloon using fighter jets without success. At 9:30 a.m., February 3, the Chinese began to claim that the balloon was part of a civilian airship used for research mainly for meteorological purposes. The Chinese are famous for sanitizing any lies just like all communist are. They have a hard time telling the truth on any issue at hand. My opinion on the spy balloon over Billings is that it is being used as a platform for a possible nuclear war. Fact: If they attacked us by nuclear warheads, they would strike New York city and eastern power grids, the bread basket of the United States, the mid-west destroying our main source of food, and Montana, so we could not escape to the north. Then Houston Texas and Los Angeles would be next. Our nation would be stopped at all points. Should this happen, Americans would go back 400 years in time. Progress and modern ways of living would come to a stand still. Dealing with spies is a new challenge in the 21st. century. And a challenge we must come to realize is a reality in our future.
