Prevention Education Harmful or Helpful? The Shift in Parenting and Consequences for Youth

By Angie Mozqueda, Prevention Specialist

In America, the dynamics of parenting have undergone a significant transformation over the years, prompting debates on whether these changes are ultimately beneficial or detrimental to the younger generation. The ramifications of what is commonly referred to as 'soft parenting' have been a subject of growing concern.

**The Evolution of Parenting Styles**

While the intentions behind soft parenting are rooted in fostering a supportive environment for children, there are concerns about its potential downsides. Critics argue that excessive leniency can lead to a lack of accountability, diminishing the sense of responsibility in children.

Years ago, the mere thought of facing parental repercussions for misbehaving instilled a sense of dread in many children. The strict accountability upheld by parents served as a deterrent against engaging in risky behaviors such as underage drinking or reckless actions. Back then, the enforcement of rules and consequences was straightforward, reflecting a collective societal approach towards discipline.

However, as societal norms shifted and parenting styles evolved, the clarity and severity of consequences became muddled. The era of programs like D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) emphasized a simple directive to 'just say no' to drugs and alcohol. This directive, backed by the authority figures of law enforcement and parents, was deemed sufficient in dissuading youth from making harmful choices. The evolution of parenting parallels a shift in societal norms. Gone are the days of simple directives like "Just say no." Today, parents are tasked with explaining the rationale behind rules and decisions, aiming to empower their children with critical thinking skills rather than mere obedience.

**Soft Parenting: The Conundrum**

The contemporary landscape of parenting paints a different picture, where the line between constructive discipline and leniency blurs. Recent incidents have shed light on the leniency shown towards underage individuals caught drinking and driving. Instead of facing immediate legal consequences akin to adults, these youths are simply released into the custody of their parents with minimal repercussions. And some possible community service hours through our local youth legal/probation system.

**Accountability and Future Implications**

The normalization of underage drinking and driving, coupled with lenient consequences, sends a concerning message to young individuals. By downplaying the severity of such actions, society inadvertently condones risky behaviors that can have devastating outcomes. The transition from stringent consequences to leniency risks fostering a sense of entitlement and impunity among youth, potentially leading to more severe transgressions in the future.

As we navigate the complexities of modern parenting and societal standards, striking a balance between understanding and accountability becomes paramount. Equipping youth with the necessary tools to make informed decisions and understand the repercussions of their actions is crucial in shaping responsible adults.

If a parent today decided to adopt a more hands-off, 90s-style parenting approach, would they be perceived as inconsiderate or neglectful? The societal norms and expectations around parenting have indeed shifted, but that doesn't mean reverting to a different style is wrong. In fact, a balanced approach that combines elements of both soft and firm parenting can help nurture well-rounded individuals. But would our community and our society support that? You decide.
