Fraud and Scam Alert

A fraud alert and scam education session was held on Tuesday evening, October 8. The Musselshell County Sheriff's office, 1st Security Bank, as well as representatives from the State of Montana were on hand to tell the public about recent scammers and their tactics.

Sheriff Shawn Lesnik and 1st Security Bank Executive Vice President Shawn Dutton were joined by the new county attorney, Ben Krawkoka, to represent Roundup and Musselshell County. DCI Agent Chris Benson and Assistant AG Mike Fanning were in attendance representing the State of Montana.

Scamming seems to be big business, and the people doing it know many trick to separate you from your money. In the past year, it is estimated approximately $100,000 has been pilfered from Roundup citizens.

If you think you may have been tricked into a scamming scheme, it is important to contact your business community, such as a bank, law enforcement, and prosecutors. It was pointed out that everyone is victimized, but the older we get, the greater the chance we will be targeted.

A rundown on scams included romance scams, tech support scams and the grandparent scam.

Scammers will usually ask you to send money in ways not familiar to you. Be very careful with people that insist you pay in unusual ways, such as large amounts of cash in the mail, gift cards, wire transfers, and now, cryptocurrency.

Remember the old adage - if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. You probably didn't win that lottery if you have to send $400 in cash every day for a week to claim it.
