The 2024 election is over, for some. But for Musselshell County, the counting goes on. For Cheryl Tomassi, counting is her job. As clerk, recorder, and election administrator for
Musselshell County, she is the overseer of elections. This year there were 3,863 registered voters. A total of 3,063 ballots were cast in this year's election. Of those registered, 2,462 were absentee. Of those absentee voters, 2,206 returned ballots. 830 voted at the polls.
Cheryl and her office staff counted those ballots from 8 PM on election day til approximately 10:30 PM. Each ballot. But it's not over yet. Now they wait for the Secretary of the State of Montana to decide which Precinct needs to be audited. Votes of that precinct will need to be recounted by hand. The second time the count is done by different county officials.
This process of validating the election will be ongoing until the end of November. So if everyone thought the election was over on the night of November 5, that was just the start of a process that ensures the election results are correct.
Cheryl is very proud of this year's voter turnout and wishes to thank everyone who voted.
