Carl Carlson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 30, 2024.
Born on April 7, 1946, in Billings, Montana, to Victor and Jean Carlson, Carl was the youngest son in the family, joining his older brother William "Bill" in a household rooted in hard work and tradition.
While growing up on the Carlson Homestead in the Bull Mountains, Carl attended school locally in Kline and graduated from Roundup High School in 1964. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country with honor and distinction. He was honorably discharged in 1968 as a decorated Marine, carrying with him a sense of duty and respect that would define his life.
Carl's life was marked by a resilient spirit and an unmatched work ethic. He wore many hats-cowboy, coal miner, roughneck, trucker, logger and gunsmith-earning a reputation for his skill and dedication in each role. When his parents' health declined, he retired to care for them, fulfilling his commitment to family until their passing.
In 1960, Carl met Darlene Logan, and after Carl graduate from high school, they went their separate ways, only to reconnect in 1976. Their love endured, and they finally married in 2003, spending the rest of his days together at the Carlson Homestead. Known for his storytelling and humor, Carl's presence brightened every gathering. He loved reloading ammunition, hunting, shooting and teaching others to shoot, often spending cherished time with family and friends, sharing stories, and imparting his wisdom. His loved saying things like "Don't let them tickle you," and "Stay out of jail," and those and other quirky words of wisdom will be fondly remembered by those who knew him best.
Carl was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Jean and Victor Carlson; his brother, Bill Carlson; sons, Joseph Tafolla and Tony Tafolla; and grandson, Marko Carlson.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene; his children: Carl David, Jack (Kristy), Carrie (Peter), Spencer (Sami), and Riky (Amanda); and his grandchildren: Carl Robert, Marty (Jacquie), Shadoe (Joshua), Chaz (Natalie), Laquisha (David), Michael, Anthony (Hope), Nolan, Jeffrey (Bailey), Tian, Jordan, Robin, Jamie, Phinnaeous, Payton, Danielle, Alexzander, and Stella, as well as numerous foster children who lovingly called him Papa.
Carl is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Jennie, Shirley (Wayne), and Loretta (John); his uncle Paul (Nadine); and extended family members, including Roger Logan, Cora Campbell, Geneva Ross, Florence Logan, and Lois Logan, along with many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of Carl's life will be held on Friday, November 22, at 1 PM at Gospel Baptist Church, located at 1246 Cook Ave., Billings, MT. A potluck reception will follow downstairs. In honor of his service, a military honors ceremony will be held in the spring at the Laurel Veterans Cemetery.
Carl Carlson will be remembered for his resilience, humor, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
