Pictograph Cave and Cooney state parks will host hikes on New Year's Day
BILLINGS – Pictograph Cave and Cooney state parks will host Fist Day Hikes on Wednesday, Jan. 1, to celebrate the new year.
First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative co-sponsored by America's State Parks. All 50 states will be participating in the 10th annual national event that encourages everyone to celebrate the New Year with guided outdoor exploration.
First Day Hike participants are encouraged to share their adventures on social media using #FirstDayHikes. Hikers should dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy footwear. Pictograph Cave State Park
This First Day Hike will be
a journey through time! The ranger-led interpretive walk will explore one of Montana's most ancient homes, occupied by humans for over nine thousand years. Pictograph Cave State Park tells the story of the early peoples of North America as they sought refuge in the natural rock shelters and shared their stories for generations by painting on the walls of this sacred place. Wildlife, such as porcupines and mule deer, is also plentiful at this site.

Meet in the park's picnic area
Hike length: 3/4 miles on the Pictograph Cave Loop.
Pictograph Cave State Park is located just outside of Billings at 3401 Coburn Road.
Cooney State Park
This First Day Hike will follow the shores of Cooney Reservoir. Keep an eye out for area wildlife, including bald eagles, white-tailed and mule deer, and red fox. Hikers can bring snowshoes or cross-country skis if they like.

Hike length: 1.5 miles on the North Shore Trail
Minimum age: 6-8 years old
